The Steps of PCB Fabrication

The first step in PCB fabrication is designing the PCB layout using specialized software. This step involves placing electronic components on a board and connecting them with copper traces. The designer must ensure that the layout meets the electrical and mechanical requirements of the product.

The next step is drilling holes in the board to allow for the insertion of electronic components. The holes must be precisely placed and drilled to ensure the components fit properly.

After drilling, a thin layer of copper is applied to the board. The copper is etched away in areas where it is not needed, leaving behind copper traces that connect the electronic components.

A solder mask is then applied to the board to protect the copper traces and prevent short circuits. The solder mask is a polymer layer applied over copper traces and drilled holes.

Finally, a silkscreen is applied to the board to label the components and provide instructions for assembly. The silkscreen is a non-conductive layer that is printed over the solder mask.
